5 Easiest Recipe for Iftar

Hello Smilers, the Holy month of Ramadan is still among us. How have you been breaking your fast and having your iftar? Today, we would like to introduce some simple and easy recipes that you can make to break your fast. Before we get into the menu, let’s learn a few words in Japanese that are related to this topic:

 

Banana – バナナ (Banana)

Sweet Potato – さつまいも (Satsumaimo)

Pumpkin– かぼちゃ (Kabocha)

Palm seed – パームシード (Paamu Shiido)

Palm Sugar– パームシュガー (Paamu Shugaa)

Pandan Leave – パンダンリーフ(Pandan Riifu)

Coconuts Milk – ココナッツミルク (Kokonattsu Miruku)

Rice Flour– お米の粉 (Okome no ko)

Mung Beans– 緑豆 (Ryokutou)

Ginger – しょうが (Shouga)

Potato Starch – 片栗粉 (Katakuriko)

Melon– メロン (Meron)

Syrup– シロップ (Shiroppu)

Basil Seed– バジルシード (Bajiru shiido)

Water– 水 (Mizu)

Ice– 氷 (Koori)

Sugar– 砂糖 (Satou)

Salt– 塩 (Shio)

1. Kolak

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 bananas
  • 200-grams pumpkin
  • 200-grams sweet potato
  • 100-grams sweet palm fruit
  • 2-litres of water 
  • 400-grams palm sugar, slice thinly
  • 3 pandan leaves, tied
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • 500ml coconut oil

 

INSTRUCTIONS :

  1. Rinse and cut the sweet potato, pumpkin and banana into cubes. 
  2. Put the sweet potato, palm sugar, salt and pandan leaves in boiling water. Boil them until they are soft.
  3. Add sweet palm fruit and banana.  Cook it on low heat until the aroma comes out.
  4. Add coconut milk and cook until it boils.
  5. The kolak is now ready to be served.

2. Sweet Coconut Rice Porridge

INGREDIENTS

  • 100-grams rice flour 
  • 250-grams palm sugar
  • 3 pandans leaves, tied 
  • 500-grams coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon of salt

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Prepare a pot and pour the coconut oil, rice flour and salt.
  2. Mix them together and heat them in low heat.
  3. Cook the coconut rice porridge until it thickens. Make sure to keep stirring to prevent it from getting burnt.
  4. Once it is done, set it aside.
  5. Heat up a new pot with water and boil the palm sugar.
  6. Add the pandan leaves and salt.  Continue stirring until it thickens.
  7. Put the coconut rice porridge in a bowl and drizzle the palm sugar syrup on top.

3. Green Bean Porridge

INGREDIENTS

  • 100-grams of mung beans
  • 65 ml coconut milk
  • 1 pandan leaf
  • Sugar (based on your personal preference)
  • Salt (based on your personal preference)
  • Ginger  (based on your personal preference)
  • 650 ml of water

 

How to make:

  1. Boil the mung beans, pandan leaf and ginger for 5 minutes. Then turn off the heat.
  2. Close the pot for 30 minutes and let it rest.
  3. Reheat to a boil the mung beans, coconut milk and sugar for 7 minutes until the mung beans are soft.
  4. The green bean porridge is ready to be served as part of your breaking fast menu.

4. Ice Fruit Soup Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 500-grams of watermelon 
  • 1 mango fruit 
  • 2 tablespoons of soaked basil seed 
  • 5 tablespoons coco pandan
  • 150 ml of condensed milk
  • 250 ml of water
  • Ice (add to your liking)

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Cut up all the fruits. 
  2. Put the fruits, soaked basil seeds, condensed milk, water and syrup into a bowl and stir them until they are properly mixed.
  3. Put in as much ice as you like and place the soup bowl in the refrigerator until it is time to serve.

5. Iced Shave Jell-O

INGREDIENTS 

  • ½ pack of jell-O
  • 35-grams of sugar 
  • 200 grams of melon
  • 250 ml of lychee syrup 
  • 1 teaspoon of basil seed 
  • 375-grams of shaved ice 
  • 800 ml of water 

 

INSTRUCTIONS 

  1. Add the Jell-O powder and sugar into a pot with hot water and stir them. Once it is boiling, pour it into a container and put it in the fridge. 
  2. Once it has cooled down, shave the jell-O using a grater. 
  3. Add the shaved jell-O, melon, lychee syrup, basil seed and water into a pot and add in shaved ice. Mix well and it is ready to be served as Iftar.
