Smiles Brings Relief to Struggling Families in Cebu After a Devastating Earthquake

A strong 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit off northern Cebu on Sept. 30, destroying homes, damaging bridges and roads, and killing dozens of people in central Philippines. Hundreds were hurt, and thousands ran out of their homes as the ground shook violently.
The tectonic quake recorded an intensity of 6.9 in Cebu and parts of Leyte. Officials said 89 cities and towns were affected, with more than 80,000 families, or about 366,000 people, impacted. Many are now staying in evacuation centers as aftershocks continue.
Some residents wrote messages on the streets and held signs asking for food, water and other help. Many areas still have no electricity or clean water.
Smiles Volunteers Deliver Relief
Many areas in Cebu have yet to receive help from the government or any organization. One such community is Barangay Malingin in Bogo Cebu, which was brought to the attention of Smiles by Ramil Roquia, a loyal Smiles member who recently returned to the Philippines. He reached out to Smiles to connect the community with those who could help.
After talking with the residents, the team learned that many people still could not return to their homes. With no nearby evacuation center, families have been staying outside their houses for safety.

On Oct. 8, 2025, Ramil and a few of his friends delivered tents, food and water to the affected families. Because vehicles could not reach the area, the volunteers carried the supplies by hand. During the distribution, an aftershock was felt, causing brief panic, but the team continued safely. Residents were very thankful, as Smiles was the first group to reach their area and offer help.
Sharing Smiles Beyond Borders

Staying through to its mission of Sharing Smiles, the team continues to extend help to those in need, even through its loyal members who have already returned home from Japan.
