Dentist in Japan
Hi Smiles friends! Welcome back to our Japan 101 series. Today we are going to share about dentist in Japan.
How often do you go to dentist? How many times do you go every year? Once? Twice? How do you find a good dentist in other country; especially Japan? Visiting a Dentist; or Haisha (歯医者) is no difference with going to other clinics. However, please keep in mind that you must make an appointment first before going to the dentist; or else they will ask you to go home and come again after making an appointment.
The first thing you have to do once you arrived in the dentist is to fill out a questionnaire form, it is usually a regular form asking for your basic information. The form is filled with same information as the one they ask you in hospitals; such as name, address, phone number, medical history, and the reason why you visit the dentist. They would also ask you to take an X-ray first, even if it is only a basic check-up. The dental process in Japan usually only last for a very short time; 20-30 minutes. So, it is necessary for you to have multiple visits until all the procedures are finished. Just to give you an example, root canals usually require at least two visits, the first visit is for the initial drilling and a follow-up to check that the tooth has not become infected.
In Japan, dental care is also covered by the Japan National Health Insurance or Employee Health Insurance. For basic dental services including routine tooth cleaning, cavity fillings, root canals, and crowns are all covered under those insurances. The amount you would have to pay for dental care is the same as the other treatments; 70 per cent will be covered by health insurance, and 30 per cent by yourself. However, for cosmetic dental care such as orthodontics and teeth whitening will not be covered by health insurance.
