Registration for the 2026 JLPT has opened

Registration for the 2026 JLPT in Japan runs from March 17 to April 7 at 5PM. However, applicants are strongly encouraged not to wait until the last minute. 

A recent notice from the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES), which administers Register Now for JLPT 2026 in Japan: Apply Early Before Seats Fill Up the test in Japan, states that applications may close earlier than the deadline if testing venues reach capacity. This means some applicants may lose the chance to register even while the official registration period is still open.

The JLPT is held twice a year in Japan.

• First test: Sunday, July 5, 2026
• Second test: Sunday, December 6, 2026

Applicants who want to take the test in Japan must register through the domestic application system managed by JEES. Registration and account access are handled through the MyJLPT online platform.

Applications may close early

Demand for the JLPT has increased in recent years as more people study Japanese for work, school and daily life in Japan. 

In a notice released by JEES, officials explained that securing testing venues has become more difficult. Because of this, the number of available seats at each location is limited.

According to the notice: 

Applications may close even during the official registration period if the capacity for testing venues is reached. 

This means that even if the deadline has not yet passed, the application system may stop accepting new registrations once seats are filled. 

For this reason, applicants are advised to complete their registration as soon as possible. 

Who can apply for the JLPT in Japan

This registration process is specifically for people who plan to take the JLPT inside Japan. 

Applicants in Japan must apply through the JEES domestic system using the MyJLPT website. When registering, test-takers are also required to provide identification. 

According to official guidance, the domestic test is generally intended for mid- to long-term residents of Japan. Applicants will need a valid residence card when completing the registration process. 

People living outside Japan must apply through a separate system in their home country. 

How to register online for the JLPT

The application process is done online and usually takes several steps. 

1. Create a MyJLPT account

Applicants must first create a personal account on the MyJLPT website. This account is used to manage registration and check test results. 

2. Submit the application

After creating an account, applicants can select the test level and preferred test location through the online system. 

3. Pay the test fee

The registration is completed once the application fee is paid through the approved payment methods. 

After the process is finished, applicants will receive a test voucher by mail before the exam date. This document includes important information such as the test venue and reporting time. 

Understanding the JLPT levels

The JLPT has five levels, ranging from beginner to advanced. The levels are labeled N5 through N1, with N1 being the most difficult. 

N5

This is the beginner level. Test-takers are expected to understand simple Japanese expressions, basic vocabulary and introductory grammar

N4

N4 represents basic language ability beyond the beginner stage. People at this level can understand simple conversations and read short passages with familiar words. 

N3

N3 is considered the middle level between beginner and advanced. Many learners see it as the point where everyday communication becomes more manageable. 

N2

N2 is one of the most commonly targeted levels for professionals. It indicates the ability to understand Japanese used in everyday situations and in a wider range of work-related contexts. 

N1

N1 is the most advanced level. It shows a strong ability to understand complex Japanese used in academic, professional and general situations. 

The test itself measures several skills, including vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension and listening ability. 

How the pass or fail system works

Each JLPT level has a scoring system that evaluates different language skills. 

The exam is divided into sections that measure language knowledge, reading and listening ability. To pass, test-takers must achieve both: 

• A minimum overall score, and 
• Minimum scores for each test section

This system ensures that applicants demonstrate balanced language ability rather than strength in only one area. 

Results are usually released online several months after the test.
