Field Diary: Honest Impressions from the Ground

Joining our ground marketing team in Nagoya for the first time was an incredible experience. By listening closely to the stories, laughter, and conversations of everyone around me, I learned so much about our Overseas Filipino Worker community in Japan.

One of my favorite encounters was with a mother in her 60s who is a long-time, satisfied Smiles user. As she rested at our booth, she shared touching stories about her children, one working and another studying at a Japanese university. She even shared her healthy lifestyle tips, talking about how she takes care of herself by eating brown rice and avoiding greasy food!

Later, as I walked around the festival grounds at Ikeda Park, I spotted familiar Filipino comfort foods like hotdog, balut, and Ilocos empanadas, along with childhood favorites like Chuckie, SkyFlakes, and Fita! Chatting with the ates and kuyas manning the food stalls, I discovered that almost all of them were already active Smiles Mobile Remittance users.

In the main dining area, while sharing the Smiles Challenge, I was even able to help an Ate download and register on the app right on the spot!

Gamifying Financial Literacy & Regulatory Safety

Drawing from years as a financial literacy advocate during my Insular Life and UnionBank days, I always pondered a key challenge: *How do you capture our community’s attention and educate them on budgeting without sounding preachy?*

Brainstorming with our NextGen leaders helped us solve this. We took the golden formula of financial education, Sweldo – Ipon = Gastos (Income – Savings = Expenses), and translated it into a fast-paced, 30-second claw-machine-style experience called the “Budget Master“.

Inspired by Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (#BSPsecuriTips) and Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) consumer protection guidelines, we brought financial awareness directly to the grassroots level through three main pillars:

1. Savings & Spending Jar Game

An interactive digital claw-machine-style game where participants aim to fill their savings jar with gold star coins. Since red overspending coins drop automatically alongside gold ones, players must strategically maneuver their jar to balance expenses while gathering enough gold stars to hit their budget goal—making financial discipline both memorable and fun!

2. Scam Awareness Quiz

Interactive cyber-safety scenarios that educated attendees on how to spot fraudulent Facebook pages, verify official account handles, and prevent remittance scams.

Live demonstrations advancing the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Financial Inclusion initiatives by showing OFWs how digital remittance tools provide safe, accessible, and affordable financial services—ensuring their hard-earned support reaches loved ones in the Philippines quickly and securely.

Community Touchpoint & Customer Support Hub

Beyond financial games, our booth served as a dedicated Customer Support Hub offering on-site assistance for:

• Account registration and onboarding
• Residence card updates
• Instant support inquiries
• Localized Octoberfest souvenir photo opportunities

Active participants were also awarded commemorative event caps and shirts as a small token of appreciation for joining us in building a financially safer community.
