What is Japan’s Special Skilled Worker (SSW) Visa? A Simple Guide for Foreign Workers

Japan introduced the Special Skilled Worker (SSW) visa in 2019 to help solve labor shortages in key industries. Many businesses in Japan need more workers, especially in jobs that require hands-on skills.

This visa focuses on practical ability rather than academic background. In simple terms, it is designed for people who can work right away. If you have the right skills and basic Japanese language ability, you may qualify.

SSW Type 1 vs Type 2

SSW Type 1

SSW Type 1 is the starting point for most applicants. It is designed for entry-level workers who have the basic skills needed for the job.

To apply, you must pass a skills test for your chosen industry and a basic Japanese language test. If approved, you can stay in Japan for up to five years in total.

However, there are some limits. Workers under SSW Type 1 cannot bring family members to Japan. Despite this, it is still a popular option because it covers many industries and offers a clear path to working in Japan.

SSW Type 2

SSW Type 2 is for workers who have gained more experience and advanced skills. This visa offers more stability and long-term opportunities.

Unlike Type 1, it allows you to stay in Japan for a longer period, with the possibility of renewal. It also allows you to bring your family members with you.

At the moment, this visa is only available in selected industries, but the Japanese government is gradually expanding it.

Industries covered under the SSW visa

The SSW visa covers 16 industries where Japan needs more workers. Some of the main fields include:

  • Nursing care
  • Construction
  • Agriculture
  • Food service
  • Manufacturing

These industries often involve physical or hands-on-work. They are important to Japan’s economy, which is why the government actively supports foreign workers in these areas.

Basic requirements to apply

To apply for the SSW visa, you must meet several basic conditions.

You must be at least 18 years old and in good health. You also need to pass both a skills test for your chosen industry and a Japanese language test for SSW 1.

Another important requirement is having a job offer from a company in Japan. This means you must secure employment before completing your visa application.

Application process

The process to apply for the SSW visa is straightforward but requires preparation.

First, choose the industry you want to work in. Then, study and pass the required skills and language exams. After that, you need to find a job with a Japanese employer.

Benefits of the SSW visa

The SSW visa offers several advantages for foreign workers.

One major benefit is that you do not need a university degree to qualify. This makes it more accessible compared to other work visas in Japan. Workers under this visa also receive equal or comparable pay to Japanese workers doing similar jobs. This helps ensure fair treatment in the workplace. In addition, there is an opportunity to move from SSW Type 1 to Type 2, which can lead to a longer stay and the ability to bring your family.

Things to keep in mind

While the SSW visa offers many opportunities, there are also things to consider before applying.

Japanese language ability is important not only for work but also for daily life. Even basic communication skills can make a big difference. Many  jobs under this visa involve physical tasks, so it is important to be prepared for hands-on work. Planning your finances before moving to Japan is also essential, especially during your first few months.
